മ്യാന്മറില്‍ നടന്ന ദേശീയ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ വര്‍ഷങ്ങളായി ജനാധിപത്യത്തിനുവേണ്ടി വാദിച്ച് പോരാടിവന്ന ഓങ് സാന്‍ സുചിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള എന്‍ . എല്‍ . ഡി. പാര്‍ട്ടി 85 ശതമാനത്തിലധികം വോട്ടുകള്‍ നേടി ഏറെ മുന്നിലെത്തി. എന്‍ . എല്‍ . ഡി. 348 സീറ്റുകള്‍ നേടിയതായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു കമ്മീഷണര്‍ അറിയിച്ചു.
ഇതോടെ 60 വര്‍ഷത്തെ പട്ടാള ഭരണത്തില്‍നിന്നും ജനങ്ങള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത സര്‍ക്കാരിലേക്ക് മ്യാന്മര്‍ മാറി. നിലവിലെ പട്ടാള ഭരണകൂടം പ്രസിഡന്റ് അധികാരം കൈമാറാമെന്നുള്ള സന്നദ്ധത അറിയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. രാജ്യത്ത് ന്യൂനപക്ഷ വിഭാഗമായ ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍ക്ക് ഇതുവരെ പല പ്രതികൂലങ്ങളേയും അതിജീവിക്കേണ്ടതായി വന്നിട്ടുണ്ട്. സുവിശേഷ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് പലപ്പോഴും അധികാരികളുടെ എതിര്‍പ്പുകളും പീഢനങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്.
